View 3/4 setAbout Larsen Original
The Danish bench standard for cello strings.
Larsen Strings has hand-finished cello strings in Sonderborg, Denmark since 1991. The Original line is the family's flagship synthetic-core cello string, designed to deliver clear projection, an even response from string to string, and reliable tuning stability across temperatures and humidity.
For 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 cellos, the same construction and winding philosophy is scaled down so each string speaks at the lower bowing pressure typical of younger players, without losing the clarity that makes Larsen recognisable.
The four voices
What each string brings.
Bright clarity
Steel core with a stranded surface winding. Speaks immediately under the bow with a clean, focused top register.
Open and rounded
Synthetic core with smooth surface winding. Blends warmly with the A while keeping the cello's singing register present.
Even and articulate
Tungsten over synthetic core. Carries the harmonic weight of the lower register without becoming muddy.
Grounded depth
Tungsten over synthetic core. Provides the cello's foundation with a stable, full-bodied bass.
Sizing & fit
Pick the size that matches the cello.
The same A, D, G, and C strings are voiced and scaled differently for each smaller-size cello. The strings on this page are for 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 instruments. Use the size selector on each variant to choose. For a full 4/4 instrument, see the standard Larsen Original Cello Strings page.
If you are not sure what size your cello is, measure the body length (top of the cello to the bottom edge, excluding the neck). A 3/4 cello is roughly 65 to 69 cm, a 1/2 is roughly 58 to 62 cm, and a 1/4 is roughly 50 to 53 cm. Email a photo to [email protected] if you would like a second opinion.

Frequently asked
Common questions.
How long do they last?
With daily playing, expect roughly six to twelve months before the response begins to soften. Students who play less often will get longer.
How long do they take to settle in?
Two to three days of playing time. The A and D usually stabilise first.
Can I mix sizes inside a single cello?
No. All four strings on one instrument should match the cello's scale length. Use a 3/4 set on a 3/4 cello, a 1/2 set on a 1/2 cello, and so on.
Are these genuine Larsen strings?
Yes. Symphonia is an authorised Larsen dealer in New Zealand and every string is supplied through Larsen's NZ distribution chain with manufacturer-backed warranty.
What if I need a 4/4 set?
The 4/4 (full-size) Larsen Original cello strings are on a separate page. Look for "Larsen Original Cello Strings" without "Smaller Size" in the title.
Need help choosing?
We can match the string to the instrument.
